Best Wide Angle Point And Shoot Camera

Looking for Wide Angle Point and shoot

Looking for Wide Angle Point and shoot

Jan 3, 2019

Hi All,

I'm looking for advice. Trying to find the widest angle point and shoot camera that's 20MP, has a view angle of 100 degrees or more, and isn't a fisheye lens.

Is there anything like this out on the market?

Thanks for any advice!

No. I think they all top out at 24mm equivalent 85 degrees

Thanks for any advice!

Re: Looking for Wide Angle Point and shoot

I think the nearest you'll get is this lens on a m4/3 body. Should give you 110 deg ish.

6.7-13 zoom on a Nikon J5 body would be wider.

Zoom is getting hard to find already though. Not parting with mine

I think you need to check your maths . The 7.5mm on a m4/3 is 15mm equivalence  the 6.7 on the j5 is 18mm equivalence.

My bad, I was guessing.

It's a nice combo though.

If by "point and shoot" you are implying fixed (non interchangeable) lens then the short answer is no, theres nothing like that currently on the market.

An angle of view of 100 degs corresponds to an effective focal length of about 18 mm.

Casio made a 19 to 95mm EFL camera, the EX-ZR5100, up until very recently but it was "only" 12MP. That would seem to be the closest if you can find one as they only seemed to market it in Asia. EBay may be of help.

Other than that, as others have said, you will need an interchangeable lens camera.

Re: Looking for Wide Angle Point and shoot

The Nikon J5 body is the same size as a SONY RX100. Same 20MP sensor, and very good it is. The wide angle zoom is of respectable brightness and lightness too, at 125g.

Not sure what point you are making.

As said above if by "pont and shoot" he means non ILC then J5 is out.

And the RX100, like most others, goes no wider than 24mm EFL.

But this may be one of those first time posters who don't come back, so I'll move on.

We weren't discussing the RX100 lens, I was just giving a size comparison. Most people don't know that the J5 got a lot smaller than the earlier J series cameras.

But this may be one of those first time posters who don't come back, so I'll move on.

I've been around on DPR for years but don't often comment, having seen how snarky it is.

The widest I'm aware of is the Sigma DP0 Q (14mm on APS-C). Very good landscape camera  although it is not exactly P&S experience

Nice but still not wide enough for OP is asking . 14mm is 21mm full frame equivalence. It is a great focal length though and a great compromise.

Ultra-wide-angle is a specialized sort of photography, so I'm not surprised there are no consumer-grade point-and-shoot cameras set up for it.  Even if there were, they'd cost more than a regular camera.

Why not just buy an inexpensive DSLR and an ultra-wide-angle lens to go with it?  Then you could use the camera for other things too.

There almost was.  The Nikon DL 18-50.  It would have filled that gap in the market.  Nikon announced it and then axed it before bring it to market.  Shame nobody else picked up the idea.

That's not wide enough. To achieve an angle of view of 100 degrees, the lens needs to be 15mm (FF equivalent).

Or <10mm on a crop sensor.

My poor 11-16mm UWA Tokina lens isn't even wide enough.

But the Nikon DX 10-20 almost is, and it's cheap:  https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1341603-REG/nikon_20067_af_p_dx_nikkor_10_20mm.html

Stick that 10-20 on a D3400, and there's a near solution for only $700.  That's cheaper than a specialized UWA camera would be.

I had to check up on that!  I was assuming this was using the manufacturer's (well Nikon's at least, haven't checked others) approach of quoting the diagonal FOV on the body it's designed for.  So 18mm gets about a 100 degree field of view on FF (76 on DX) and the specs for the 10-20 above are quoted at 109 to 70 degrees by Nikon itself.  Tokina quote the 11-16 at 104 to 84 which again look like diagonals on DX.

Clearly room for confusion on this one!

You could be right.  I was assuming horizontal angle of view.
